Afterthoughts: Dishonored

Looking back at Dishonored, it was clear that I loved the game.

I thought the atmosphere was unique, giving me a run-down Victorian England vibe and an art style very reminiscent to Bioshock. The setting itself was diverse. Each mission was split into a multistage map, littered with sidequests here and there and TONS of variety in terms of terrain mobility. Overall, the look and sound of the game was simply great.

The story was also enjoyable, yet a littleĀ convoluted. I really dug the whole “revenge” aspect of the story, but I felt like the buildup was too fast paced. I would’ve enjoyed getting to know the person I was avenging throughout the entire game a little bit more. Also, this was one of the first games with a silent protagonist that I was really quite bothered. I didn’t need a ton of dialogue, but some here and there would’ve gone a long way (Master Chief style). Those two tidbits aside, I really thought the story was cool. A bunch of the characters felt unique, each crooked in their own way.

I’ll wrap up my thoughts with the gameplay. Now, I’ve heard a lot of people complaining about a lack of UI when it comes to knowing if you’re visible or not, but I didn’t seem to have a problem with it. Maybe I just didn’t expect as much assistance? Oh well. I’ve also heard complaints about the sword fighting. This I will agree with: I really wasn’t a big fan. But, it doesn’t take away from the experience too much considering all of your other powers/weapons can be used to make the sword play either easier or not even a factor. I thought that terrain traversal was expertly crafted, and was likely my favorite part of the game. I’d scale across buildings, sneak past guards and/or catch them off guard and show them who’s boss.

Off of the rubric, I’d give Dishonored:

  1. I would be interested to know whether it retains Bethesda’s patented, glitches that have become synonimous with their titles? That being said, it does sound like a throughly engaging game. Great review.

    • I ran into one (known) glitch in the game. During the second mission, my game would literally crash every time I went into a different area. But, I just restarted the mission entirely and everything went smoothly. Arkane Studios definitely went through this game a lot to make it run smoothly. It appears they just missed this one. No harm no foul in my book.
